Sponsored swimmers show off their bounty Lifeguard team surfaces with a 600 boost JUL 1989 WANTAGE lifeguards sur- faced with the most money to boost the Oxford Mail Life saver Appeal. A nine-strong team led by Dick Cole towed a swimmer for 32 lengths of the pool at Wantage Recreation Centre and raised 600 through sponsorship. The event took place dur- ing the annual sponsored swim organised by the Wan- tage branch of the British Heart Foundation. The number of swimmers this year more than doubled to 51, and the event raised a record 2,394, including the 600. Co-ordinator Mr Fred Redfern said that with the other donations apart from the swim, the group was well on its way to buying its second heart-restart machine for Wantage am- bulances. During a presentation night at Wantage Red Cross Hall, one of the machines was demonstrated to guests. Retired Wantage GP Dr Dick Squires, the Heart Foundation’s president, is pictured acting as “guinea pig” for ambulance staff Richard Quinn and Sue Phillips. After presenting the team trophy to Wantage life- guards, the mayor Mr Keith Collyer, handed out indivi- dual cups to senior and junior individuals who had raised the most money 68-year old Mrs Milly Moss from East Challow, and nine-year old Michael Hackwood from Nobles Close, Grove. – PUSH BAR imunot ng Ma
